Saraki: CCB In Fresh Move Against Senators, Reps

Bureau scrutinises records of ex-govs,others •Northern lawmakers under pressure Written by: Taiwo Adisa - Abuja .It emerged on Friday that despite the perceived rapprochement between the Presidency and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, a move aimed at splitting Saraki’s support base in the Senate and the House of Representatives has been flagged off. Investigations by Saturday Tribune showed that the Code of Conduct Bureau, which keeps the records of public officers, has commenced the vetting of the records submitted by senators and members of the House of Representatives. Investigations revealed further that the Bureau is concentrating on new Senators and Rep members while the files of former governors in the Senate is also being examined. It was gathered that the leadership of the Bureau had set aside the forms submitted by Senators and members of the House of Representatives following the hype over their investigation by the CCB. It was learnt that aside from keeping the files away from the prying eyes of the public, the Bureau has also commenced detailed scrutiny of the files to determine those that would be referred to the Code of Conduct Tribunal. An alarm was raised last week, following the commencement of the trial of Saraki at the CCT but the Bureau, through its spokesperson, Iyabo Akinwale, insisted on Monday that the CCB was not specially investigating anyone. When contacted, Akinwale said, “I am not aware of anything like that.” Investigations, however, revealed that the files of former governors in the Senate have come under scrutiny, while that if newly elected senators and Rep members are also being examined. A source said that the experience of the CCB has confirmed that newly elected persons into office have the tendency of making faulty and anticipatory declarations. The source said that the powers of the CCB have been renewed through the Criminal Administration law which was passed under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The source said that the Bureau is already planning to operate under the auspices of the CCT Act and the Criminal Administration Act to ensure it barks and bite at the same time. “The Bureau will not overlook infractions to the law just because some persons are making a noise in the media. A number of newly elected senators and former governors already have their files separated for further action. It is being vowed that some of those who are seen as making anticipatory declarations are not to be treated as having made mistakes,” the source said. When asked why the focus is on members of the National Assembly, the source insisted that the Bureau should start from somewhere, adding that its officials believe they can now operate better with the Criminal Justice Administration Act. Sources in Abuja also told Saturday Tribune that lawmakers from the North who are backing Saraki have come under intense pressure from the people who are already seeing them as working against the interests President Buhari. Family members of some of the lawmakers are said to have started forwarding messages of threat to their lives to the lawmakers, who believe however that the Buhari-Saraki saga would end soon.

Centenary Celebration Needless, Distortion Of Nigeria’s History – Fashola

Babatunde-Fashola04032011

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has slammed the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan for its plan to mark Nigeria’s 100 years anniversary in 2014, stressing that it was a proposal which might distort Nigeria’s history.

The governor also condemned the resort of some aggrieved groups “to violence and threats as a way to resolve our differences.”
While delivering an address to mark the country’s 53rd independence anniversary at the Police College, Ikeja, Fashola expressed concerns over the planned 100 years celebration of Nigeria’s statehood.
Fashola questioned the plan by the federal government to mark a centenary of the country’s existence, a day which he said, had never been celebrated either before Nigeria attained independence or after.

He argued that the unity of Nigeria “is driven by its diversity and the competitive productivity that can come from it. But as far as centenary is concerned, Nigeria was born an independent sovereign country on October 1, 1960.
“Perhaps, Nigeria was conceived in 1914. But as we race towards this, it is important not to distort history. I will seek better understanding and better explanation by those who are behind the centenary celebration.
“If we rolled out the drums three years ago to celebrate 50 years of Nigeria’s nationhood, independence which our nationalists fought for and people went to jail for, what then is this centenary all about? How did they come about it?
“I do not remember as a child ever coming out at amalgamation day. Suddenly, how did we get to 100? Did we celebrate 99? Did we do 50? Did we do 60? There is something wrong here. I do not know, but I will want some clarifications. A generation is coming behind us; they need to be clear about the history of our country.”

The governor added: “As I said, maybe the conception of Nigeria took place in 1914, but it is the birthday, the date of birth of a child that we celebrate and I think that that birthday is October 1, 1960. This country has gone through its fair share of adversity, but today, what is important is that through it all, we are still standing as one.”
Fashola also expressed optimism for the future of Nigeria in spite of various challenges facing the country, noting that he remained inspired by the fact that Nigerians continued “to repose their faith in this country.”

Fashola therefore commended the spirit of resilience, which he said, propelled his countrymen “to always forge ahead in the face of all odds. At the last anniversary, we have made a lot of progress in the state because progress in the areas of public service is how you measure the success of true independence and democracy.”

Our Nation Is The Target Of Attacks, Not The Victims – Tinubu

Tinubu1
Former Lagos State Governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, Tuesday, raised the alarm that Nigeria was under attack, following the killing of about 40 students in Yobe State by members of the Boko Haram sect, calling for the arrest of the perpetrators.
“The recent carnage in Borno State and now at the College of Agriculture in Yobe State reminds us of the sinister nature of the enemy our nation now faces. There should be no mistake at this somber moment. Those who launched these attacks did not launch them at the people they killed. They knew not the names of their victims or who they were.
“The dead were just unfortunate souls who happened to be close enough to murder. The real targets of these massacres are our nation, society and any semblance of civilised, modern life. Nigeria is under attack and the earlier those in charge realise this, the quicker the situation can be arrested. In terms of security, the present is not safe, neither is the future secured,” Tinubu lamented.
Describing the murdered students as “innocent young people who were just entering the fullness of life,” the former governor said: “ These young people only wanted an education to improve their future and that of the nation. They were armed only with this desire and with the tools of students.
“They had done no one any harm. Yet, their attackers executed them in the cruelest fashion. “This is terror in its basest form. By this act, the crazed and armed menace we face tells us that attending school, attempting to get education, is now a capital offence. Those guilty of seeking to learn are to be executed.”
He therefore urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in the belief that enlightenment and progress were the best, adding that no matter how the enemies of the nation tried to frighten the people, Nigerians should continue to walk in the light of learning, justice, hope and tolerance, unity and progress.
“What we face is nothing less than a contest for the soul of the nation. We dare not lose the contest. These young people died just because they wanted to learn and live better.
“We can’t allow their deaths to be in vain. We must rededicate ourselves that all of our children shall learn and live better because of the education they shall receive.
“We must look beyond the deaths and spilled blood of these innocent children. In times like these, it is easy to give up and recede into our fears. Yet, we must be of good courage. We must not give way to sorrow or despair. We must forge ahead with our best plans and preparations for the people”
The APC leader however appealed to the federal government to take the issue of security of lives seriously and be more proactive in developing a comprehensive law enforcement, intelligence-gathering and economic incentives strategy that could checkmate the plague.
“I make this not as a partisan jab. I make this as a Nigerian who sees the larger danger lurking behind these attacks. These murderers seek to shutter the educational system in the North. Should they accomplish this, they will only attack another social institution, then another, until all are flattened. They intend to make Nigeria desolate. In their warped minds, this will be paradise. Paradise for them will be purgatory for the rest of us”
Tinubu, however, said that Nigerians must not give up but keep hopes alive as the country shall overcome its present predicament and that justice would ultimately prevail.
“We cannot allow their violence to dictate the path that we must go,” he said.
